Please Show Me the Way

ਅਨਿਕ ਜਨਮ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਥਿਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
anik janam bharam thit nahee paa-ee.
I wandered through countless incarnations, but I did not find stability anywhere.

kara-o sayvaa gur laaga-o charan govind jee kaa maarag dayh jee bataa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I serve the Guru, and I fall at His feet, praying, "O Dear Lord of the Universe, please, show me the way."||1||Pause||

In plain words

I have drifted a long, long time, and I have never found solid ground.

So I serve the Guru and rest at the Guru's feet. With all my heart I ask: dear One of the whole universe, please show me the way.

The honest question — show me the way — is already the start of the way.
The deeper layer

After a long, long search, I ask one thing: show me the way.

Anik janam bharam thit nahee paa-ee — I wandered through many lifetimes and found no thit, no solid ground to stand on. It is like wandering a huge mall with no map, never finding the exit.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It sets the question for the whole song: maarag dayh, show me the way. Every verse that follows is another way of asking this one thing.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel lost, who or what do you ask for direction?
