Is There Such a Saint?

anik upaav kara-o maa-i-aa ka-o bachit Dhara-o mayree mayree karat sad hee vihaavai.
I have tried so many things to acquire the wealth of Maya, and to cherish it in my mind; I have passed my life constantly crying out, "Mine, mine!"
ko-ee aiso ray bhaytai sant mayree laahai sagal chint thaakur si-o mayraa rang laavai. ||2||
Is there any such Saint, who would meet with me, take away my anxiety, and lead me to enshrine love for my Lord and Master. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have chased after so many things, trying to gather and hold on to them, always saying mine, mine.

That is how the days quietly slip by.

Is there someone wise out there who could meet me, lift this worry off my shoulders, and turn my love toward the One?

A life spent clutching mine quietly slips through the fingers.
The deeper layer

A life spent saying "mine, mine" slips quietly away.

Mayree mayree karat sad hee vihaavai — saying "mine, mine" all the time, my life passes by. Think of a toddler holding every toy and shouting "Mine!" There is no time left to actually play.

Here a question begins that the song keeps asking. Ko-ee aiso ray bhaytai sant — is there such a Saint who could meet me? A sant is a holy, wise person. The question comes back again and again through the song, full of longing.

A Question to Sit With

What things do you call mine, and which of them will last?
