Ritual Without Love

karam Dharam jugtaa nimakh na hayt kartaa garab garab parhai kahee na laykhai.
One who is attached to religious rituals, does not love the Lord, even for an instant; he is filled with pride, and he is of no account.
jis bhaytee-ai safal moorat karai sadaa keerat gur parsaad ko-oo naytarahu paykhai. ||6||
One who meets with the rewarding personality of the Guru, continually sings the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises. By Guru's Grace, such a rare one beholds the Lord with his eyes. ||6||

In plain words

You can be an expert at every ritual and rule, and still not feel a spark of love — and pride only puffs it all up until none of it counts.

But whoever meets that life-giving guide keeps singing the praises of the One.

By grace, such a rare person sees the One with their very own eyes.

Ritual without love is a full basket with nothing inside.
The deeper layer

Love is what brings the rules to life, and singing the One's praise brings the One into view.

Karam Dharam jugtaa nimakh na hayt kartaa — someone can be an expert in every religious rule, karam Dharam, yet feel no love, hayt, even for an instant. Garab, pride, then makes it all count for nothing. It is like knowing every rule of soccer but never enjoying the game.

The other side is meeting the safal moorat, the guide whose presence bears fruit. That person keeps singing keerat, songs of praise. By grace, such a rare person sees the One with their own eyes.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think love matters more than doing everything perfectly?
