The Crane Who Pretends to Pray

manhath jo kamaavai til na laykhai paavai bagul ji-o Dhi-aan laavai maa-i-aa ray Dhaaree.
One who acts through stubbornness is of no account at all; like a crane, he pretends to meditate, but he is still stuck in Maya.
ko-ee aiso ray sukhah daa-ee parabh kee kathaa sunaa-ee tis bhaytay gat ho-ay hamaaree. ||7||
Is there any such Giver of peace, who can recite to me the sermon of God? Meeting him, I would be emancipated. ||7||

In plain words

Forcing things through sheer stubbornness carries no weight.

It is like a crane standing perfectly still by the water, pretending to pray — while its mind is only fishing for what it wants.

Is there a giver of peace who could tell me the story of the One? Meeting that person, I would finally be free.

Stillness on the outside is not the same as peace on the inside.
The deeper layer

What matters is being holy inside, not just looking holy.

Bagul ji-o Dhi-aan laavai — like a crane, he looks as if he is meditating. A crane stands perfectly still in the water, as if lost in prayer. But its mind is only hunting for fish. It is like pretending to read while really waiting for the teacher to look away.

Manhath, stubborn willpower, carries no weight on its own. So I long for a sukhah daa-ee, a giver of peace, who will tell me the story of the One. Meeting such a person would set me free.

A Question to Sit With

Can you look calm on the outside while feeling restless inside? What helps close that gap?
