Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 97
Verse 3 of 5

One Master, Two Roads

too sachaa sirjanhaar alakh sirandi-aa jee-o.
You are the True Creator Lord, the unknowable Maker.
ayk saahib du-ay raah vaad vaDhandi-aa jee-o.
There is only the One Lord and Master, but there are two paths, by which conflict increases.
du-ay raah chalaa-ay hukam sabaa-ay janam mu-aa sansaaraa.
All follow these two paths, by the Hukam of the Lord's Command; the world is born, only to die.
naam binaa naahee ko baylee bikh laadee sir bhaaraa.
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the mortal has no friend at all; he carries loads of sin on his head.
hukmee aa-i-aa hukam na boojhai hukam savaaranhaaraa.
By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, he comes, but he does not understand this Hukam; the Lord's Hukam is the Embellisher.
naanak saahib sabad sinjaapai saachaa sirjanhaaraa. ||3||
O Nanak, through the Shabad, the Word of the Lord and Master, the True Creator Lord is realized. ||3||

In plain words

You are the maker of everything, and no one can fully know You.

There's only One behind it all, and yet people split into "me" and "mine," and that splitting is where quarrels grow.

Everyone walks these two roads, as the flow of existence has set it. People are born, and in time they pass on.

Without holding the Name, a person walks alone, carrying a heavy load of mistakes with no real friend beside them.

The flow of existence brought each of us here, even when we don't understand it, and that same flow is what makes things beautiful.

Nanak says: through the teaching, the True Maker becomes clear.

There's only One behind everything; the quarrels start when we forget that.
The deeper layer

There is only One behind everything, and quarrels grow when we forget it.

Ayk saahib du-ay raah — one Master, two roads. Saahib means Master. The two roads are the pull of seeing "me" as separate, against the truth that all is one. It is like two players on the same team fighting over the ball. They forget they are on the same side.

Hukam savaaranhaaraa — the Hukam, the flow of existence, is what makes things beautiful. We often do not understand it. Yet that same flow shapes us and makes us lovely.

The Shabad, the Guru's Word, is how the One is recognized.

A Question to Sit With

When do you notice yourself splitting the world into "me" versus "them"?
