In plain words

There is only One. The One is found by the True Guru's grace.

When the dear One is kind, the Naam rises easily in your heart.

Meeting the teaching with love, you find yourself singing about the One without even trying.

Sing that way, morning and night, and you blossom open like a flower in the sun.

The feeling of being separate and self-important quietly lets go, and you settle naturally into the Name. Everything good comes as a gift you receive, not a prize you earn.

Everything good comes as a gift you receive, not a prize you earn.
The deeper layer

Everything starts with grace, and then the heart sings on its own.

Har jee-o kirpaa karay taa naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai — when the dear One is kind, we keep the Name in mind. This line opens the verse and closes it. It all begins with grace, and grace is always already offered.

Guru Ram Das links sahj, natural ease, with vigsai, blossoming. The singing is not forced. It opens like a flower in the morning sun.

Aap day-ay ta paa-ee-ai — we receive only what is given. It is a gift, not a prize.

A Question to Sit With

When has something good felt more like a gift than something you had to earn?
