A Love That Always Remembers

andar saachaa nayhu pooray satigurai jee-o.
Deep within, I feel true love for the Perfect True Guru.
I serve Him day and night; I never forget Him.
I never forget Him; I remember Him night and day. When I chant the Naam, then I live.
sarvanee sunee ta ih man tariptai gurmukh amrit peevaa.
With my ears, I hear about Him, and my mind is satisfied. As Gurmukh, I drink in the Ambrosial Nectar.
nadar karay taa satgur maylay an-din bibayk buDh bichrai.
If He bestows His Glance of Grace, then I shall meet the True Guru; my discriminating intellect would contemplate Him, night and day.

Deep within, I feel true love for the Perfect True Guru. ||2||

In plain words

Deep inside me there's a true, steady love for the teaching that guides me.

I want to stay close to it day and night, always keeping it in mind.

When I take the Naam, I come alive. When I listen closely, my mind is satisfied, like drinking sweet water when I'm thirsty.

With grace, that clear inner sense wakes up and stays awake, helping me tell what's real from what only pretends to be.

Holding the One in mind is what makes me come alive.
The deeper layer

When I take the Naam, I come alive.

Jaa naam la-ee taa jeevaa — when I hold the Name, then I live. Guru Ram Das links deep listening to a mind at rest. Sarvanee sunee means hearing with my own ears. Then the mind is tariptai, satisfied, like a thirsty kid finally getting cold water.

Bibayk buDh is wisdom that can tell what is real from what only passes by. It wakes up through nadar, the kind glance of grace.

A Question to Sit With

What's something you'd like to keep in mind every single day?
