Chasing What Can't Come With You

doojai bhaa-ay dukh ho-ay manmukh jam johi-aa jee-o.
In the love of duality, there is pain and suffering; the Messenger of Death eyes the self-willed manmukhs.
haa-ay haa-ay karay din raat maa-i-aa dukh mohi-aa jee-o.
They cry and howl, day and night, caught by the pain of Maya.
maa-i-aa dukh mohi-aa ha-umai rohi-aa mayree mayree karat vihaava-ay.
Caught by the pain of Maya, provoked by his ego, he passes his life crying out, "Mine, mine!".
jo parabh day-ay tis chaytai naahee ant ga-i-aa pachhutaava-ay.
He does not remember God, the Giver, and in the end, he departs regretting and repenting.
Without the Name, nothing shall go along with him; not his children, spouse or the enticements of Maya.
doojai bhaa-ay dukh ho-ay manmukh jam johi-aa jee-o. ||4||
In the love of duality, there is pain and suffering; the Messenger of Death eyes the self-willed manmukhs. ||4||

In plain words

When you live as if you're all alone and separate, life starts to ache.

Chasing after "mine, mine" all day and night leaves you restless, tugged around by things that never quite satisfy.

It's easy to forget the One who gives us everything, and then to feel a pang of regret later, wishing we'd noticed sooner.

None of the things we grip so tightly — not even the people and treasures we love most — can travel with us in the end. Only the Naam stays.

The things we grip most tightly can't come with us; only the Naam stays.
The deeper layer

Living as if you are cut off from the One makes life ache, and the things we grab cannot come with us.

Doojai bhaa-ay dukh ho-ay — in the love of duality there is pain. Doojaa bhaa-o means loving the "second": the feeling of being separate from the One. Mayree mayree — "mine, mine," said over and over. It is like a little kid hugging every toy and never getting to play with any.

Guru Ram Das is not trying to scare anyone. He wants us to see clearly. Only the Name goes along with the soul. Everything else is on loan, like a library book that has to go back.

A Question to Sit With

What's something you hold onto tightly that you might be able to hold a little more lightly?
