Raag Gauree
Commentary

Raag Gauree, Fifth Mehl (Guru Arjan)

A feverish, troubled mind can cool into deep calm through the teaching that leads to light — a healing that comes not in one dramatic moment but through gentle daily remembrance, good company, and thought, word, and deed all turned the same way.

The Arc

The Rahao (Pauri 0) shares warm good news with fellow seekers: peace has come, and the burning troubles have faded. Pauri 1 gives the gentle practice — speaking the Name steadily on the tongue, restoring wholeness. Pauri 2 pairs the unfathomable goodness of the One with the deliverance found in good company. Pauri 3 emphasizes dailiness — healing through a habit returned to day after day. Pauri 4 gathers the whole self — mind, word, deed — into remembrance and rests in sanctuary.

  • agam: unfathomable, unreachable — the depth of the One's goodness

  • man bach karam: "mind, word, and deed" — the whole self turned one way
  • sarnaa-ee: sanctuary, shelter — the closing place of rest

Themes and Cross-Connections

The shabad's healing is gentle and cumulative, embodying the project's positive framing of naam simran — recitation as a loving return, never a grim chore. Saadhoo sangam continues the batch-wide theme of the seeking community as the place where the impossible becomes crossable. The man bach karam trio connects to Sach as living truthfully — no gap between inner and outer. The warm addresses (bhaa-ee, meet) reflect Gurbani's fellowship of shared healing.

For Raag Gauree

Gauree's reflective calm perfectly fits a shabad whose keynote is saant, tranquility. The mood is soothing and companionable — good news shared among friends about a feverish mind cooled into rest.
