Raag Gauree, Chau-Pada, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Effort cools the mind, good company clears misfortune, the dropping of self dissolves separation into the One — and the long search finally comes to rest.

The Arc

A shabad of arrival. Pauri 0 rises from calm effort to supreme joy: turning toward the One cools the mind, lifts the aches, fills it with bliss. Pauri 1 holds the Rahao and ||2||: well-being comes home, good company banishes misfortune, and the body itself finds purpose in service. Pauri 2 turns on the key line aap ga-i-aa taa aapeh bha-ay — when the self goes, one becomes the One: haumai dissolving into oneness. Pauri 3 closes on the end of seeking — having found what you always wanted, where is left to look? — resting in the home of peace by the teacher's grace.

Key Vocabulary

  • udam karat / seetal: sincere effort / cool, calm — the mind that turning brings
  • khaym, kusal: well-being, peace — arriving "home"
  • charan kamal: lotus feet — an image of loving reverence, not literal
  • aap ga-i-aa taa aapeh bha-ay: when the self goes, one becomes the One — Haumai dissolving
  • asthir / sukh baasan: steady / the home of peace — the search at rest

Themes and Cross-Connections

The heart of the shabad is philosophy.md's Haumai: aap ga-i-aa taa aapeh bha-ay is the wave remembering it was always ocean — separation dissolving, not the self being punished. The close on asthir (steadiness) and sukh baasan (home of peace) joins the batch's settled-home current (B00C422, B00C423). The rising joy of Pauri 0 (calm to bliss to parmaanand) shows Arjan's characteristic movement from effort into effortless grace.

For Raag Gauree

Gauree's reflective register holds the inward journey well — this is not ecstatic release but a steady homecoming, the quiet of a search that has finally ended.
