In plain words

When I put real effort into turning toward the One, my mind grows cool and calm. Walking that path, my aches fall away. Keeping the Name alive within me, my mind fills with joy, and singing what is beautiful about the One, I taste the deepest happiness there is.

Turning toward the One cools the mind, brings comfort in pain, and fills you with quiet joy.
The deeper layer

This one says that turning toward the One brings calm, then comfort, then joy.

Udam karat seetal man bha-ay — through real effort, the mind grows seetal, cool and calm. The effort here is not straining. It is simply turning your face toward the One.

Maarag chalat sagal dukh ga-ay — walking that path, the aches fall away. This is a heart speaking words of hope to itself. It is not a promise about how pain will always behave.

Then the joy grows. Naam japat man bha-ay anand — keeping the Name, the One's presence, in mind, the mind becomes anand, full of joy. Singing the One's goodness brings parmaanand, the highest joy of all.

Think of climbing stairs up to a sunny rooftop. Each step is a little brighter. First calm, then relief, then joy, then the deepest happiness.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you turn toward that leaves you calmer and happier than before?
