Raag Gauree
Commentary

Raag Gauree, Chau-Pada, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

You alone are my counsel; what my clever methods could not find, being gently gathered in did — and the Name arrives as a free gift, bringing natural ease.

The Arc

Pauri0 (Pause) makes the Oneness the sole deebaan (counselor), served with the teaching's support. Pauri1 confesses that countless techniques failed, until the teaching took hold and enlisted the seeker. Pauri2 speaks of overcoming five inner adversaries by the teaching's grace — which this project renders, for younger readers, as calming rather than conquest. Pauri3 names the Name as a bakhsees (free gift, not wages), bringing peace, sahaj, and rest. Pauri4 closes on the radiant faces of those who serve wholeheartedly.

Key Vocabulary

  • deebaan: chief counselor/court — here, the Oneness as one's only advisor
  • anik jugat: countless devices/methods — the seeking mind's tricks, which fail
  • panch bikhaadee-aa: the five inner adversaries, overcome by the teaching's grace; the verse does not list them — tradition names them craving, anger, greed, attachment, pride
  • bakhsees / vajahu: bounty/gift vs wages — the Name is gift, not earnings
  • sahaj: natural, unforced ease; the settled state the gift brings

Themes and Cross-Connections

The pivot from jugat (technique) to being "taken hold of" is the project's grace-lens in action: the finding is not the seeker's achievement. Rendering the "five thieves" as inner states to be calmed rather than enemies to be slaughtered reflects the voice rule that ego and impulse are diseases to heal, not crimes to punish. Bakhsees vs vajahu crisply states grace-not-payroll; sahaj connects to the philosophy of the aligned soul at ease.

For Raag Gauree

The raag's meditative steadiness suits a shabad about self-mastery arriving as ease rather than exertion — the calm after the struggle of methods.

Translation Notes

Sant Singh Khalsa renders Pauri2's panch bikhaadee-aa as "five tyrants" and "the army of evil," with "conquered" and "vanquished." The project reframes these as inner troublemakers to be calmed, per the wellbeing/voice rules against warfare-against-self imagery.
