Raag Gauree
Commentary

Raag Gauree, Chau-Pada, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

The Name is the one shelter that reaches all the way down; cleverness can't hack a good heart, and ego-driven goodness washes away like a house of sand.

The Arc

Pauri0 (Pause) names the Name as the soul's true olHaa (shelter), contrasting it with worldly arrangements that never quite settle the deep unease. Pauri1 insists this can't be seized by extra effort — only received in openness. Pauri2 measures cleverness and finds it weightless against what truly matters. Pauri3 gives the unforgettable image: ego-driven good deeds are a house of sand swept off by the tide. Pauri4 resolves in mercy — the Name received in good company.

Key Vocabulary

  • olHaa: a shelter or covering; the Name as the roof that actually holds
  • jatan: effort/striving — which cannot, by itself, obtain the gift
  • hikmat: clever schemes/stratagems; useful for much, weightless against the real
  • ahaN-budh: the "I-am-great" mind; deeds done from it have no foundation
  • garih baaloo: "house of sand" — ego-goodness swept off by water

Themes and Cross-Connections

The weighing of hikmat (cleverness) and finding it light directly echoes the Gauree keynote set in B00C245: cleverness is weightless, the real is weighty. The house-of-sand image extends the project's sach vs jhooth theme into the moral realm — goodness built for an audience has no foundation, while humble goodness stands. The resolution in saadhoo sang keeps the recurring "good company" thread.

For Raag Gauree

Gauree's sober self-examination is exactly the mood here: a clear-eyed look at what we build our safety on, landing on the one shelter that holds.

Translation Notes

Sant Singh Khalsa renders Pauri0's bha-o... jaam kaa as "the fear of death still hangs over you." The Gurmukhi supports the death-fear reference; per project wellbeing rules this is kept as a gentle honesty about worldly safety-nets never fully settling the deep unease, rather than a threat.
