Raag Gauree
Commentary

Raag Gauree, Shabad, Mehl 9 (Guru Tegh Bahadur)

Real wisdom is not knowledge but steadiness: to such a heart, praise and blame, gold and copper, delight and sorrow all weigh the same, because none of them can shake it.

The Arc

The rahao (Pauri 0) locates true rest in the shelter of the One and reframes all study as pointing toward that remembrance. Pauri 1 sketches the free person by what no longer moves them. Pauri 2 gives the great equanimity list — heaven and hardship, nectar and poison, gold and copper, praise and blame, all alike. Pauri 3 names the fruit: this steadiness is wisdom, and the one who lives it is free.

Key Vocabulary

  • raam saran bisraamaa: rest lives in the shelter of the One
  • harakh sog: elation and grief — the swings the settled heart is free of
  • surag narak: heaven and hardship — a paired opposite, not a torture-image
  • ustat nindaa: praise and slander — landing alike on the even mind
  • sahaj / giaanee: natural ease / the truly wise — wisdom as steadiness, not knowledge

Themes and Cross-Connections

This is a portrait of sahaj (philosophy.md): the unshakeable ease of one rooted deeper than circumstance — not coldness but stability. The reframing of bed puraan as study that ripens into remembrance honors learning without disparaging any tradition, per the project's interfaith care. "Hell" (narak) is handled as one pole of a pair rather than a fear-image, in keeping with the wellbeing rules — the point is evenness, not damnation.

For Raag Gauree

Gauree's sober contemplation is the perfect vehicle for a teaching on equanimity. The shabad does not raise its voice; it simply lists, calmly, everything that can no longer disturb the settled heart.
