In plain words

Friends, real rest — the settled kind — is found in the shelter of the One.

This is what all the reading and study is finally for: that you might quietly hold the Name in your heart and remember it.

The point of all learning is a quiet, settled rest — holding the One in your heart.
The deeper layer

This one says the whole point of learning is to find rest in the One.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. saaDho raam saran bisraamaa — holy friends, rest is found in the One's shelter. Bisraam means rest, the settled kind.

The next line honors study. bayd puraan parhay ko ih gun — this is the gift of reading the Vedas and the Puraanas, old sacred books of India. The gift is simray har ko naamaa, that you remember the One's Name.

Think of practicing piano scales for months. The scales matter. But they are for one thing: making music.

Learning is honored here, not pushed away. No tradition is put down. Study becomes worthwhile when it ripens into holding the Name.

A Question to Sit With

When you finally understand something you studied hard, what do you do with that understanding?
