Raag Gauree
Commentary

Raag Gauree Gwaarayree, Mehl 3 (Guru Amar Das)

The world runs itself ragged on ego and worry and forgets to know its own self; the cure is to keep the One in the heart and taste its sweetness.

The Arc

Pauri 0 diagnoses a world driven mad by ego and duality, anxious and self-forgetful. The Rahao (Pauri 1) prescribes meditating in the heart, where the Gurmukh's tongue tastes the essence. Pauri 2 finds the One inside the Gurmukh's own heart, crowned by grace. Pauri 3 names the Name as the nine treasures, received from the Guru. Pauri 4 closes: keeping the One's name brings peace untouched by death, for the self-sufficient One.

Key Vocabulary

  • baurraanaa: the world driven mad by ego and duality
  • apnaa aap: one's own self, which the anxious world fails to recognize
  • nau nidh: the nine treasures — all wealth gathered in the Name
  • self-sufficient One: the Lord who is its own master and advisor

Themes and Cross-Connections

The shabad sets the Haumai diagnosis (philosophy.md) against the interior cure: the One found within one's own heart, the same truth as the jewel within. The nine treasures make the Name the only wealth worth gathering, and the peace untouched by death restates the deathless witness. The remedy for ego-madness is remembrance that can be tasted (Har Ras).

For Raag Gauree

Gauree's contemplative key lets Amar Das hold up a mirror to a frantic world and then turn the listener gently inward, where the One and a peace beyond death are already waiting.
