Raag Gauree Gwaarayree, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Why doubt? The One fills earth, water, and sky -- so sleep in peace and stop worrying, for the One who fills everything knows everything.

The Arc

Pauri 0 asks why we doubt, when the One pervades water, land, and sky. The Rahao (Pauri 1): the one the merciful One protects has no rival. Pauri 2 is pure consolation: sleep in peace, do not worry, the Infinite knows all. Pauri 3 shows the self-facing dying thirsty in duality, harvesting what they plant. Pauri 4 closes: beholding the One, the heart blossoms and sees the One everywhere.

Key Vocabulary

  • why doubt?: Guru Arjan's reassurance -- the One is everywhere, so anxiety is groundless
  • sleep in peace: the consolation of trust in the all-knowing, all-pervading One
  • as you plant, so you harvest: the karma principle for the self-facing
  • vigaas: the heart blossoming and seeing the One everywhere

Themes and Cross-Connections

One of Guru Arjan's great consolation-shabads. Its center -- sleep in peace, do not worry -- rests on Ik Onkar and Hukam (philosophy.md): the One who fills and knows all makes worry pointless. Doubt dispelled, the heart blossoms and sees the One everywhere it was always present.

For Raag Gauree

Gauree's contemplative weight lets the reassurance land deeply. The shabad moves from a question about doubt to the peace of one who can sleep untroubled -- and ends in the blossomed heart that sees the One in all directions.
