Raag Gauree
Commentary

Raag Gauree, Mehl 1 (Guru Nanak)

The mind stays wide awake for all the wrong things; wonder and honest confession open the door, and the One who fills every home is the boat across.

The Arc

Pauri 0 sketches the manmukh mind, alert to falsehood and harm, and calls it to swim across holding the Name. The Rahao (Pauri 1) is the cry of wonder — Vaahu! — paired with honest confession: I am flawed, You alone are pure. Pauri 2 returns to the body's engine of appetite and names the single hinge: conquer self-conceit and the Name appears. Pauri 3 teaches dying in the Shabad so one never dies again, against the duality of the scheming self. Pauri 4 urges boarding the boat when your turn comes, blesses the place where praises are sung, and seals with the One pervading every hearth and home.

Key Vocabulary

  • Vaahu: the exclamation of wonder — the same root as Waheguru, wonder rather than a name
  • haumai: self-conceit; conquering it is what uncovers the Name
  • jeevat marnaa: dying in the Shabad so as never to die again
  • ghat ghat: every heart and home — where the One Creator actually dwells

Themes and Cross-Connections

The Rahao ties directly to philosophy.md's reading of Waheguru as wonder, not a name: Vaahu vaahu is awe breaking into speech. The shabad also restates haumai as the one obstacle and jeevat marnaa as the cure, and ends on the lived form of Ik Onkar — the One is not in a distant temple but in the ordinary home, the heart of the project's grihast teaching.

For Raag Gauree

Within Gauree's contemplative frame, this shabad moves from sober self-diagnosis to a burst of wonder and back to the homely assurance that the One is right where you live — a characteristic Nanakian arc from honesty to awe to grounded peace.
