The Mind Wakes for All the Wrong Things

Gauree, First Mehl:

The conscious mind is engrossed in sexual desire, anger and Maya.
ਝੂਠ ਵਿਕਾਰਿ ਜਾਗੈ ਹਿਤ ਚੀਤੁ ॥

The conscious mind is awake only to falsehood, corruption and attachment.

So swim across the river of life, O my mind, with the Sacred Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The waking mind gets soaked in craving, anger, and the glitter of the world. It stays wide awake for lies, for harm, for clinging -- and busily piles up greed and wrongdoing. So swim across the river of life, my mind, holding on to the Name.

The mind stays wide awake for all the wrong things -- the Name is what carries it across.
The deeper layer

A precise sketch of the manmukh mind: "awake" to all the wrong things -- falsehood, corruption, attachment -- and asleep to the real. Maya here is not "money" but the whole shimmering field of appearances that captures attention. The remedy is the recurring world-ocean crossing: swim across, holding the Name as the only flotation.

A Question to Sit With

What does your mind seem most "awake" to? Is that what you want it awake to?
