Commentary

Raag Gauree Gwaarayree, Chau-Pada / Du-Pada, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

An honest look at how the heart grips what it can't keep and mistakes the passing for the real — resolved not by perfect effort but by the One who draws the confused seeker close.

The Arc

This shabad opens a new set with its own Ik Onkar Satgur Prasaad. Pauri 0 names the confusion: claiming the borrowed as our own, clinging to what must be let go. The Rahao (Pauri 1) asks the honest central question — how can we meet the One while chasing what pulls us away? Pauri 2 sharpens it into the sach/jhooth mistake: taking the passing for the real. Pauri 3 pictures a life weaving crookedly against its own grain. Pauri 4 resolves in grace: the One masters both worlds, and unites the confused seeker regardless.

Key Vocabulary

  • jo paraa-i-o so-ee apnaa: claiming as one's own what belongs to another — attachment to the borrowed
  • bibarjat: what is to be avoided — the very things the heart fixes on
  • sach / jhooth: the real and lasting / the false and passing — the core Gurbani contrast
  • baavai maarag: the crooked path — a life working against its own grain
  • jis maylay so muktaa: whom the One unites is freed — liberation as grace, not achievement

Themes and Cross-Connections

The shabad is a compact meditation on Sach (philosophy.md): the world's jhooth washes off like cheap dye, while only sach holds — yet the mind keeps confusing the two. Its tone is self-examination without self-condemnation, exactly the register the project's wellbeing rules ask for: the crooked-path imagery is turned toward gentle self-recognition ("look how I complicate the simple thing"), never shame. The resolution is pure Gurprasad — the seeker who got everything backwards is precisely the one grace reaches.

For Raag Gauree

Gauree's reflective, sober mood is ideal for this inward audit. The shabad asks the listener to look honestly at the gap between stated values and actual attention — then lifts the weight of that honesty with the reassurance that union is given, not earned.
