The Past Is Done, the Future His; No Second Doer

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
ga-orhee mehlaa 1.
Gauree, First Mehl:
ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਨਹ ਮੇਟੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
kirat pa-i-aa nah maytai ko-ay.
Past actions cannot be erased.
ਕਿਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਕਿਆ ਆਗੈ ਹੋਇ ॥
ki-aa jaanaa ki-aa aagai ho-ay.
What do we know of what will happen hereafter?

Whatever pleases Him shall come to pass.
ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕਰਣੈ ਵਾਲਾ ਦੂਆ ॥੧॥
avar na karnai vaalaa doo-aa. ||1||
There is no other Doer except Him. ||1||

In plain words

What is already done cannot be undone. And who really knows what comes next? Whatever the One wishes is what happens. There is no other doer anywhere.

The past is done and the future is the One's -- there is no second doer.
The deeper layer

A clear statement of Hukam: the past is fixed, the future is the One's, and there is no second doer. This is not a fatalism that kills effort but a release from the ego's anxious sense of being the sole author of its life.

A Question to Sit With

What is something from the past you are still wishing you could undo? Can you let it rest?
