How can I cross over the terrifying world-ocean? ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

What kind of honoring could I offer You? By what way could I ever cross this deep and difficult ocean of a life?

"By what way do I cross the deep water?" — the honest question of anyone who feels life is hard to get across.
The deeper layer

The questions go deeper now.

Kavan so poojaa tayree kara-o — what worship should I offer You? Kavan so bidh jit bhavjal tara-o — what way will carry me across the bhavjal? The bhavjal is the world-ocean. It is Gurbani's picture of a life full of fear and grabbing, a life that feels hard to get across.

The seeker wants the right method for the crossing. It is like looking for the perfect instructions before a hard test.

The shabad patiently lets the questions pile up, one honest "how?" after another. That way, when the answer comes, it can undo the whole idea that everything depends on finding the right method.

A Question to Sit With

What's a hard thing in your life you're not yet sure how to get across?
