What Needs Washing Is the Pride of Feeling Separate

ਕਵਨ ਤਪੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਤਪੀਆ ਹੋਇ ॥
kavan tap jit tapee-aa ho-ay.
What is that penance, by which I may become a penitent?
ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਖੋਇ ॥੩॥
kavan so naam ha-umai mal kho-ay. ||3||
What is that Name, by which the filth of egotism may be washed away? ||3||

In plain words

What discipline could make me truly steady? And what Name could wash away the pride that keeps me feeling separate?

The real thing that needs washing away is the pride that makes us feel separate — and the Name is what dissolves it.
The deeper layer

Now the questions reach the real problem.

Kavan tap jit tapee-aa ho-ay — what discipline makes a person truly disciplined? Tap is hard, steady practice. Then comes the key question: kavan so naam ha-umai mal kho-ay — what Name will wash away the dirt of ha-umai?

Ha-umai is the ego. It is the feeling of being a separate self, cut off from everything else. Here it is called mal, a stain. A stain is something to wash out, like mud on a school shirt. It is a sickness to heal, never a crime.

The seeker rightly senses that this separateness is what stands in the way. So they ask for the one thing that dissolves it. The question now points at the heart of the matter.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like when you drop the need to be separate or better, and just belong?
