Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
A life that forgets the One misses its own point. Without the Name held close, what is all our busyness even for? Let me keep the One in mind, and my days fill with meaning.
A life that remembers its Source has a purpose.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Its words are very strong. Mar na jaahee jinaa bisrat raam says that a life which forgets the One has lost its point, as if it were not really being lived.
Underneath is a gentler question. Naam bihoon jeevan ka-un kaam — without the Name, what is life for? The teaching is about meaning, not about blaming anyone.
Think of a phone with a dead battery. It looks fine, but it cannot do what it was made for. A day spent forgetting the Source misses its own purpose. A day that remembers it comes alive.
What makes an ordinary day feel meaningful to you rather than just busy?
