Outward Fun Shines Only With Real Life Within

ਖਾਤ ਪੀਤ ਖੇਲਤ ਹਸਤ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ॥
khaat peet khaylat hasat bisthaar.
Eating, drinking, playing, laughing and showing off
ਕਵਨ ਅਰਥ ਮਿਰਤਕ ਸੀਗਾਰ ॥੨॥
kavan arath mirtak seegaar. ||2||
- what use are the ostentatious displays of the dead? ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Eating, playing, laughing, showing off our nice things -- all of that is fun, but if there is nothing deeper underneath, it is like dressing up an empty room. The real sparkle comes from what lives inside.

Outward fun shines only when there is real life within.
The deeper layer

Fun on the outside shines only when there is real life on the inside.

Khaat peet khaylat hasat bisthaar — eating, drinking, playing, laughing and showing off. The verse's own picture is mirtak seegaar, decorating the dead. It is a stark picture with a plain meaning: pleasures and display are hollow when there is no life inside.

The point is not that fun is bad. It is that decoration with nothing real underneath decorates nothing. It is like hanging balloons in an empty room. Fill the inside first, and the outside becomes joyful instead of empty.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever had a fun day that still felt empty inside? What was missing?
