Verse 4 of 5

Listen for the Deeper Joy

ਜੋ ਨ ਸੁਨਹਿ ਜਸੁ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦਾ ॥
jo na suneh jas parmaanandaa.
Those who do not listen to the Praises of the Lord of supreme bliss,
ਪਸੁ ਪੰਖੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਗਦ ਜੋਨਿ ਤੇ ਮੰਦਾ ॥੩॥
pas pankhee tarigad jon tay mandaa. ||3||
are worse off than beasts, birds or creeping creatures. ||3||

In plain words

Sometimes we never once stop to listen to the praise of the One who is pure joy.

Then we live below our own gift. We are more asleep than the animals, the birds and the creeping creatures, who at least live fully as themselves.

Take time to listen for the deeper joy -- that is what human awareness is for.
The deeper layer

Take time to listen for the deeper joy, because that is what human awareness is for.

Jo na suneh jas parmaanandaa — those who do not listen to the praise of parmaanand, the One of highest joy. The verse compares them to pas pankhee, animals and birds and creeping creatures. That is a sharp comparison. It is meant as a wake-up nudge, not an insult.

The idea: a human who never listens for the deeper joy is not using the special gift of human awareness. It is like owning a piano and never once playing it.

The answer is suneh, to listen, deeply. Even a little listening lifts the whole life.

A Question to Sit With

When was the last time you truly listened -- not just heard, but really took something in?
