Those We Love Are Gifts Held for a While

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
ga-orhee mehlaa 5.
Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਕਾ ਕੀ ਮਾਈ ਕਾ ਕੋ ਬਾਪ ॥
kaa kee maa-ee kaa ko baap.
Whose mother is this? Whose father is this?
ਨਾਮ ਧਾਰੀਕ ਝੂਠੇ ਸਭਿ ਸਾਕ ॥੧॥
naam Dhaareek jhoothay sabh saak. ||1||
They are relatives in name only- they are all false. ||1||

In plain words

Whose mother, whose father, whose family is truly 'mine' forever? These names of belonging are real and dear -- and yet they are borrowed for a while, not owned. Underneath every label, we all come from one Source.

The people we love are dear gifts held for a while, not possessions we own.
The deeper layer

This shabad addresses grief and the fear of loss. Naam Dhaareek jhoothay sabh saak -- relations are 'relatives in name,' impermanent. We are careful here: the point is not that family love is fake, but that these bonds are held on loan, not possessed. The deeper belonging is to the One from whom everyone comes. This sets up the comfort that follows.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people you love most -- and what would it mean to treasure them as gifts rather than take them for granted?
