We clutch and cry 'mine, mine' -- but the soul itself does not die. The truest part of anyone is not the kind of thing that can be lost.
The truest part of anyone -- the soul -- is not the kind of thing that can be lost.
Maranhaar ih jee-araa naahee -- this soul is not perishable. The original billaahee (wailing 'mine, mine') is the grasping of grief. The teaching offered as comfort: what you love in a person is the deathless soul, and that is not the kind of thing loss can erase. We keep this gentle and hopeful, never dwelling on frightening funeral imagery.
