Through the Shabad, the Word of the Perfect Guru, I recognize God. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Why be afraid, when the one great awe washes all other fear away? Through the teacher's word, I come to recognize the One.

One great awe drives out all fear, and the teaching helps you recognize the One.
The deeper layer

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Its message: one great awe drives out every other fear.

Ki-aa daree-ai dar dareh samaanaa — why be afraid, when fear melts into the Fear of the One? Here that Fear means awe, a deep and loving wonder. Think of standing under a huge night sky. The feeling is so big that small worries have no room.

Pooray gur kai sabad pachhaanaa — through the shabad, the Word, of the perfect Guru, I recognize the One. Pachhaanaa means to recognize.

Knowing the One is not something we make up. It is like remembering a face you have always known.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a difference between being afraid and being in awe? What is it?
