Verse 1 of 5

When Kindness Rains, the Name Rises to Your Lips

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
ga-orhee mehlaa 5.
Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਅਪਨੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੈ ॥
jaa ka-o apnee kirpaa Dhaarai.
Those, upon whom the Lord Himself showers His Mercy,
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਾਰੈ ॥੧॥
so jan rasnaa naam uchaaray. ||1||
chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, with their tongues. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When kindness rains down on a person, the Name rises naturally to their lips. It is not forced -- it flows, the way you sing when you are truly happy.

When kindness rains down, the Name rises naturally to your lips.
The deeper layer

Jaa ka-o apnee kirpaa Dhaarai -- those on whom the One showers mercy. So jan rasnaa naam uchaaray -- speak the Name with their tongues. The order matters: mercy first, then the Name flows. Remembrance is presented as the fruit of grace, not a task you grind out. Rain is the gentle image.

A Question to Sit With

When you are truly happy, do good words and songs come out of you all on their own?
