Whole-Body Devotion, and a Hard-Won Life Redeemed

ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
charan kamal thaakur ur Dhaar.
Enshrine the Lotus Feet of your Lord and Master within your heart.
ਦੁਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਿ ॥੪॥੫੧॥੧੨੦॥
dulabh dayh naanak nistaar. ||4||51||120||
Thus this human life, so difficult to obtain, shall be redeemed. ||4||51||120||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Hold the beautiful presence of the One in your heart. Do that, and this rare and precious human life is carried safely home -- not wasted, but fulfilled.

The whole body's devotion gathers into one closing word: this hard-won life, redeemed.
The deeper layer

The closing couplet. Charan kamal thaakur ur Dhaar -- enshrine the lotus-feet in the heart. Dulabh dayh naanak nistaar -- the rare human body is redeemed. It closes the body-catalogue by returning to the heart, and echoes the dulabh dayh theme (see 356), traditionally read as the rarity of human birth: all these limbs' devotion gathers into this one closing word of redemption.

A Question to Sit With

If your life is a rare gift, what would 'not wasting it' look like this week?
