Verse 4 of 5

Those Who Quietly Do Good Become Beautiful

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਟਹਲ ਕਰਤ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
har kee tahal karat jan sohai.
Working for the Lord, His humble servants look beautiful.
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਗਨਿ ਨ ਪੋਹੈ ॥੩॥
taa ka-o maa-i-aa agan na pohai. ||3||
The fire of Maya does not touch them. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

People who quietly do good in the world become beautiful -- there is a real glow to them. And the hot pull of greed and craving cannot burn them.

The shabad says people who quietly do good become beautiful, and greed's fire does not touch them.
The deeper layer

Har kee tahal karat jan sohai -- doing the One's work, the humble look beautiful. Maa-i-aa agan na pohai -- the fire of maa-i-aa (illusion, greed) does not touch them. Maa-i-aa as fire is a Gurbani staple -- the consuming heat of endless wanting. Service cools it; in the shabad's language a life of quiet good is luminous and untouched by that fire.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed a real glow in someone who is kind and helpful without showing off?
