Good Company Breathes Life Into a Going-Through-Motions Heart
ਮਿਰਤਕ ਦੇਹ ਸਾਧਸੰਗ ਬਿਹੂਨਾ ॥
mirtak dayh saaDhsang bihoonaa.
Their bodies are corpses, without the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਜੋਨੀ ਦੁਖ ਖੀਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aavat jaat jonee dukh kheenaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
They come and go in reincarnation, and are destroyed by pain. ||1||Pause||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
A life lived entirely apart from good company can feel oddly lifeless -- going through the motions, carried round and round by its own aches. Good company is what breathes life back in.
Good company breathes life back into a heart just going through the motions.
The Rahao. Mirtak dayh saadhsang bihoonaa -- the body is like a corpse without the company of the holy. Aavat jaat jonee dukh kheenaa -- worn down by coming and going in the cycle. We render mirtak (corpse) gently as 'lifeless / going through the motions,' and the reincarnation-cycle as being carried 'round and round.' The cure named is saadhsang -- good company breathes life back in.
A Question to Sit With
What kind of company makes you feel truly alive rather than just going through the motions?
