The Finest Treats Can't Free a Bound Heart

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
ga-orhee mehlaa 5.
Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਅਨਿਕ ਰਸਾ ਖਾਏ ਜੈਸੇ ਢੋਰ ॥
anik rasaa khaa-ay jaisay dhor.
Like beasts, they consume all sorts of tasty treats.
ਮੋਹ ਕੀ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਚੋਰ ॥੧॥
moh kee jayvree baaDhi-o chor. ||1||
With the rope of emotional attachment, they are bound and gagged like thieves. ||1||

In plain words

You can feast on every tasty thing and still feel strangely trapped inside -- tied down by too much clinging, unable to move freely. The finest treats cannot free a heart that is bound up.

The finest treats cannot free a heart that is bound up inside.
The deeper layer

Anik rasaa khaa-ay jaisay dhor -- consuming every delicacy like an animal. Moh kee jayvree baadhi-o chor -- bound by the rope of attachment like a thief. We soften 'like a caught thief' into simply feeling trapped by too much clinging. Moh (over-attachment) is the rope; the teaching is that outer abundance does not free an inwardly bound heart.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever had everything you wanted and still felt stuck or restless inside?
