Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 118
Verse 5 of 5

When Grace Is Poured Out, the Unfinished Is Made Whole

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਜਬ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੀ ॥
gur poorai jab kirpaa karee.
When the Perfect Guru granted His Grace,
ਭਨਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਰੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਪਰੀ ॥੪॥੫੪॥੧੨੩॥
bhanat naanak mayree pooree paree. ||4||54||123||
says Nanak, I was totally, completely fulfilled. ||4||54||123||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the complete teacher poured out kindness on me, everything in me that had felt unfinished became whole. I was filled right up.

When grace is poured out, what felt unfinished in you becomes whole.
The deeper layer

The closing couplet. Gur poorai jab kirpaa karee -- when the perfect teacher granted grace. Mayree pooree paree -- I was completely fulfilled. Pooree paree -- 'it fell complete for me,' a wholeness arriving as a gift. The shabad ends in the fullness the manmukh of verse one was missing: not earned, but poured out.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt suddenly whole, like something missing had quietly been filled in?
