Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
By your grace, I get to keep your Name in mind. By your grace, I find a welcome place, a seat where I belong. Even the ability to turn toward you is itself a gift.
Everything good here, even the remembering itself, comes as a gift of grace.
Tumree kirpaa tay japee-ai naa-o — by Your grace, I say Your Name. Kirpaa is grace, kindness given freely. Tumree kirpaa tay dargeh thaa-o — by Your grace, I find a place in Your Court. The dargeh, or Court, is the One's own home, where we are welcomed.
The words tumree kirpaa tay, "by Your grace," come back again and again through the whole shabad. Here the verse gives grace the credit for the Name and for the welcome.
Many readers go one step further. They say that even the wish to remember is grace too. The verse does not say this in words. It is a gentle way of reading its refrain. Read that way, you do not earn your way in. Think of a friend who invites you to a party and also gives you a ride. Grace hands you the door, and the wish to walk through it.
What good thing in your life was really a gift, even the wanting of it?
