Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 128
Verse 3 of 5

With the One in Mind, Sorrow Cannot Cling

ਤੁਮ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੇ ਤਉ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
tum man vasay ta-o dookh na laagai.
If You abide in the mind, we do not suffer in sorrow.
ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੇ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥੨॥
tumree kirpaa tay bharam bha-o bhaagai. ||2||
By Your Grace, doubt and fear run away. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When you live in my mind, sorrow cannot get a hold on me. By your grace, my doubts and fears turn and run.

With the One living in your mind, the verse says sorrow does not attach.
The deeper layer

When the One lives in your mind, sorrow does not stick, and doubt and fear run away.

Tum man vasay ta-o dookh na laagai — when You live in the mind, sorrow does not attach. Dookh is sorrow or pain. Na laagai means it does not stick.

Many read this gently. Sad things may still pass through. But with the One living inside, sorrow finds nothing to hold on to. This is a way of reading the line, not something it spells out. Think of rain on a raincoat. The rain still falls, but it slides right off.

Tumree kirpaa tay bharam bha-o bhaagai — by Your grace, doubt and fear run away. Bharam is doubt. Bha-o is fear. They simply leave.

A Question to Sit With

What worry might lose its grip if you kept something good living in your mind?
