Verse 3 of 5

Fortune Without Love Is Walls Without a Home

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਗੁ ॥
naam binaa naahee mukh bhaag.
Without the Naam, no one's face shows good fortune.
ਭਰਤ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਕਹਾ ਸੋਹਾਗੁ ॥੨॥
bharat bihoon kahaa sohaag. ||2||
Without the Husband, where is the marriage? ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without the Name, a face does not shine with good fortune. Real belonging is like a home with love living in it — without that love, the house is only walls.

Good fortune without love inside it is only walls without a home.
The deeper layer

Good fortune without love inside it is like a house with no home in it.

The first line says that without the Name, no face shines with real good fortune. The second line uses the picture of a marriage. Bharat bihoon kahaa sohaag — without the beloved partner, where is the joy of being married? Sohaag means that happy, wedded belonging.

So the point is belonging and love. Picture a house with fancy furniture where no one loves each other. It has walls, but it is not a home. The Name is the love living inside. Without it, all the outer signs of good fortune are empty walls.

A Question to Sit With

What makes a place feel like a home and not just a building?
