Verse 4 of 5

The Greatest Have Dissolved Into Something Larger

ਜਨ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਕਥੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
jan kee mahimaa kathee na jaa-ay.
The Glories of the Lord's humble servants cannot be described.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਜਨੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥
paarbarahm jan rahi-aa samaa-ay. ||3||
The servants of the Supreme Lord God remain absorbed in Him. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The greatness of those who truly serve the One cannot even be put into words. They have melted so fully into the One that you cannot tell where they end and it begins.

The greatest people are the ones who have quietly dissolved into something larger than themselves.
The deeper layer

This one says the greatest people are the ones who have melted into the One.

Jan kee mahimaa kathee na jaa-ay — the glory of the humble cannot be put into words. Paarbarahm jan rahi-aa samaa-ay — the servant is absorbed in the Supreme One.

Samaa-ay is the key word. It means merged, dissolved into. Think of a spoon of sugar stirred into warm milk. You cannot find the sugar anymore, but every sip is sweet.

That is the highest praise. These people have stopped being separate. Their haumai, the me-first feeling, is gone. So their greatness is really the One shining through them.

A Question to Sit With

What do you admire in someone who does good without needing to be noticed?
