Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Sing the praises of the One who fills the whole universe, my friends. Joining with good and holy people, keep the Name of the One in your thoughts.
This is the heart of the shabad: sing the One's praises together, and keep the Name in your mind.
It is the Rahao line, the "pause." It is the center of the shabad, the line everything else circles back to.
Govind gun gaavhu mayray bhaa-ee — sing the praises of the Lord of the universe, my brothers and sisters. Mil saadhoo har naam dhi-aa-ee — joining the holy, keep the Name in your thoughts. The call is to a family, mayray bhaa-ee, "my siblings." Nobody is left to do it alone.
Two things are joined here. One is singing praise out loud, together. The other is holding the Name quietly inside. Think of a choir. Each voice sings out, and each singer also listens inside to stay in tune. Outward song and inward attention are one practice.
What is better done together than alone — and why does the company help?
