Verse 2 of 5

One Presence Fills All; No Need to Pretend

ਰਾਮੁ ਰਮੈ ਸੋਈ ਰਾਮਾਣਾ ॥
raam ramai so-ee raamaanaa.
Those who remember the Lord belong to the Lord.
ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਏਕੁ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jal thal mahee-al ayk samaanaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The One Lord is contained in the water, the land and the sky. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

The one who truly holds the One in mind belongs to the One. And that same Oneness is present everywhere — in the water, on the land, in the sky above — one presence filling it all.

One presence fills the water, the land, and the sky — so there is never any need to pretend.
The deeper layer

This is the calm, hopeful center of the shabad: the One is everywhere, so there is no need to pretend.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad, the line the rest is measured against. Raam ramai so-ee raamaanaa — the one who remembers the One belongs to the One. Jal thal mahee-al ayk samaanaa — the One fills the water, the land and the sky, all evenly.

The whole shabad's point about pretending rests on this. There is one presence, seeing everything, everywhere. So there is nowhere to hide. And that is good news, because there is also no need to hide. Think of being at home with family who already know you. You can drop the act and just be yourself.

A Question to Sit With

If goodness is everywhere and sees everything, how does that make honesty easier?
