Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 135
Verse 4 of 5

Having Nothing to Hide Is a Kind of Freedom

ਅਨਿਕ ਪੜਦੇ ਮਹਿ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥
anik parh-day meh kamaavai vikaar.
Hiding behind many screens, they commit acts of corruption,
ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹੋਹਿ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥੩॥
khin meh pargat hohi sansaar. ||3||
but in an instant, they are revealed to all the world. ||3||

In plain words

You can hide things behind screen after screen, doing what you know isn't right where no one can see. But in a single moment the truth can come to light, and what was hidden stands plain before everyone.

Hiding takes endless effort; having nothing to hide is a kind of freedom.
The deeper layer

This one says hiding takes endless work, and it can all fall down in a moment.

Anik parh-day meh kamaavai vikaar — behind many screens, a person does vikaar, wrong things. Parh-day are curtains or screens. Khin meh pargat hohi sansaar — in an instant, it is all shown to the world.

Think of stacking a tower of cards to hide something behind it. Every day you add more cards. One sneeze, and it all falls. Hiding is endless, tiring work. The verse points to the relief on the other side: the ease of having nothing to hide.

A Question to Sit With

Why does having nothing to hide feel lighter than keeping a secret?
