Verse 4 of 5

Next to Real Love, Every Pleasure Turns Pale

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
bin har simran sukh nahee paa-i-aa.
Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, peace is not found.
ਆਨ ਰੰਗ ਫੀਕੇ ਸਭ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
aan rang feekay sabh maa-i-aa. ||3||
All the other loves and tastes of Maya are bland and insipid. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without keeping the One in mind, real peace stays out of reach. Every other color, every other passing pleasure, turns out to be pale and flavorless next to it.

Next to real love, every passing pleasure turns out pale and flavorless.
The deeper layer

Next to real love, every passing pleasure looks pale and tastes flat.

Bin har simran sukh nahee paa-i-aa — without simran, peace is not found. Simran means remembering the One, keeping the One in mind. Aan rang feekay sabh maa-i-aa — all the other colors of maya are feekay. Maya is the passing, glittering world. Feekay means bland, faded, tasteless.

Feekay is the perfect opposite of the deep red laal rang from the pause line.

Think of a juice box that has been sitting out and watered down. It looked exciting on the label. But it tastes like almost nothing. The pleasures that promise so much turn out pale beside the one color that actually lasts.

A Question to Sit With

What once seemed exciting but felt flat and empty once you actually got it?
