Even When You Forget, the One Sets You Right

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਮ ਲੂਣ ਹਰਾਮੀ ॥
kaho naanak ham loon haraamee.
Says Nanak, I have been unfaithful to my own nature.
ਬਖਸਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥੪॥੭੬॥੧੪੫॥
bakhas layho parabh antarjaamee. ||4||76||145||
Please forgive me, O God, O Searcher of hearts. ||4||76||145||

In plain words

I know I forget more than I should, that I don't always live up to the goodness I was made for. Hold me gently anyway, O One who sees straight into every heart, and set me right.

Even when you forget, the One who sees your whole heart can hold you gently and set you right.
The deeper layer

This one says that even when you forget, the One who sees your heart can forgive you and set you right.

This is the closing line, signed with the name Nanak. Loon haraamee is an old saying. It means "untrue to the salt." Salt stands for the food someone gives you. Being untrue to it means forgetting the one who feeds and keeps you.

Here it is honest noticing that reaches toward grace. It is not beating yourself up. Think of saying sorry to a parent who already knows what happened and already loves you.

Antarjaamee means the "inner-knower," the One who sees into every heart. That One is called on not as a judge, but as the One who already understands and can forgive.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you start fresh after you've slipped up on something?
