Verse 4 of 5

Enjoy the Gifts, but Thank the Giver

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਖਾਵਹਿ ਖਾਨ ਪਾਨ ॥
amrit ras khaaveh khaan paan.
They consume food and drink, delicious and sublime as ambrosial nectar.
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਏ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਹਿ ਸੁਆਨ ॥੩॥
jin dee-ay tiseh na jaaneh su-aan. ||3||
But the dog does not know the One who has bestowed these. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I feast on food and drink as sweet as nectar, one gift after another.

And how easily I forget to even glance toward the One who set the whole table.

Enjoy the gifts fully — and remember to look up with thanks toward the Giver.
The deeper layer

This one says: enjoy the gifts, and remember to thank the Giver.

The verse describes food and drink as sweet as amrit, nectar. Then it uses a strong word. The one who eats and forgets the Giver is called su-aan, a dog. It is a picture of hunger with no thanks in it. A dog gulps its dinner and never wonders who filled the bowl.

The verse is not calling people names. It points at a very human habit. We enjoy the gifts and forget who gave them. The teaching is to turn toward thanks. And there is hope in it: remembering is always open to us, at any meal, at any moment.

A Question to Sit With

Next time you eat something you love, could you take one second to feel grateful?
