A Little Daily Remembrance Washes Much Away

ਹਰਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
har din har simran mayray bhaa-ee.
Meditate in remembrance on the Lord every day, O my Siblings of Destiny.
ਕੋਟਿ ਜਨਮ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kot janam kee mal leh jaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Thus, the filth of millions of incarnations shall be taken away. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Every single day, keep the One in loving memory, my dear ones. Do this, and the weight of countless yesterdays — all the grime we pick up along the way — lifts and falls away.

A little daily remembrance quietly washes away a great deal of accumulated weight.
The deeper layer

A little remembering of the One every day quietly washes away a great deal of old dirt.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Har din har simran mayray bhaa-ee — every day, remember the One, my brothers and sisters. Simran means remembering, keeping the One in mind with love. That daily remembering is the practice.

Kot janam kee mal leh jaa-ee — the dirt of millions of lifetimes is washed away. Mal means dirt or grime. Here it is the leftover build-up of ego and mistakes.

It is not scrubbed off with hard work. It comes off through the clear, steady attention of every day. Think of a river stone. The water doesn't scrub it. It just keeps flowing over it, day after day, until the stone is smooth.

Mayray bhaa-ee sets a warm tone. It is a friend talking to friends.

A Question to Sit With

What is one small thing you could do every single day to feel lighter inside?
