Verse 1 of 5

Grace Brings the Teacher, and Trouble Lets Go

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
ga-orhee mehlaa 5.
Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਭੇਟੇ ਗੁਰ ਸੋਈ ॥
kar kirpaa bhaytay gur so-ee.
The Lord bestowed His Mercy, and led me to meet the Guru.
ਤਿਤੁ ਬਲਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥
tit bal rog na bi-aapai ko-ee. ||1||
By His power, no disease afflicts me. ||1||

In plain words

Grace reached me and brought me to the teacher I needed. And from the strength of that meeting, I feel steadier and well — no trouble can get its grip on me the way it used to.

Grace brings you the teacher you need, and from that strength, trouble loses its grip.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says grace brought him to the teacher, and from that meeting came a new strength.

Kar kirpaa bhaytay gur so-ee: by grace, kirpaa, the meeting with the Guru was arranged. The Guru is the teacher and the teaching. Tit bal rog na bi-aapai ko-ee: by that strength, no rog sticks. Rog means sickness, of the body or of the inside.

The point is a new steadiness. Think of a raincoat. The rain still comes, but it slides off instead of soaking in. That is how trouble meets someone who has met the teacher.

A Question to Sit With

Who is a teacher — of any kind — whose meeting changed something for you?
