A Heart Drunk on Glitter Finds No Rest

ਰੋਗ ਗਿਰਸਤ ਚਿਤਾਰੇ ਨਾਉ ॥
rog girsat chitaaray naa-o.
Gripped by disease, they invoke the Name.
ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਤੇ ਕਾ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਉ ॥੨॥
bikh maatay kaa tha-ur na thaa-o. ||2||
But those who are intoxicated with vice shall find no home, no place of rest. ||2||

In plain words

When trouble grips us, we remember to call the Name — and that is good. But a heart drunk on nothing but glitter finds no resting place, no home to settle into.

A heart drunk on glitter alone finds no rest; a heart that remembers finds home.
The deeper layer

Even hard times can turn a heart toward home.

Rog girsat chitaaray naa-o — gripped by rog, sickness or trouble, a person remembers the Name. Here hardship works a little like a teacher. It points us home.

Then the contrast. Bikh maatay kaa tha-ur na thaa-o — one who is bikh maatay, drunk on poison, has no home and no place to rest. Here the poison is the dazzle of illusion. Think of a phone that keeps buzzing all night. You never really get to sleep.

A heart with no true home stays restless. That is simply how such a heart is. A heart that remembers finds its home.

A Question to Sit With

What gives you a feeling of "home" that you can carry anywhere inside you?
