Verse 3 of 5

By Grace You Cross, and Mistakes Wash Clean

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਰਿਆ ॥
gur parsaadee saagar tari-aa.
By Guru's Grace, one crosses over the world-ocean;
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਸਭਿ ਹਿਰਿਆ ॥੨॥
janam janam kay kilvikh sabh hiri-aa. ||2||
the sinful mistakes of countless incarnations are all washed away. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

By grace, one crosses the wide sea of the world.

And the small mistakes gathered over a long, long time are all washed clean away.

By grace you cross the world's wide sea, and long-gathered mistakes are washed clean.
The deeper layer

It is grace that carries us across, and grace that washes old mistakes clean.

Gur parsaadee saagar tari-aa — by the Guru's grace, one crosses the ocean. The ocean is the whole wide world, with all its waves of worry and wanting.

This does not mean effort is useless. The verses around this one still ask us to keep the One in the heart and to remember. Grace and effort go together.

Janam janam kay kilvikh sabh hiri-aa — the mistakes of lifetime after lifetime are all wiped away. Think of a whiteboard covered with years of old scribbles. One wipe, and it is clean again. The same grace that carries us across also clears away all that old mess.

A Question to Sit With

When has help you didn't earn carried you across something you couldn't cross alone?
