Verse 3 of 5

Close to the One, Death's Shadow Loses Its Power

ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਿਐ ਦੁਖ ਰੋਗ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥
har bisri-ai dukh rog ghanayray.
Forgetting the Lord, all sorts of pains and diseases come.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੇਵਾ ਜਮੁ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਨੇਰੇ ॥੨॥
parabh sayvaa jam lagai na nayray. ||2||
Serving God, the Messenger of Death will not even approach you. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I lose sight of the One, worries and heaviness of every kind seem to pile up.

But when I live close to that presence, even the fear of death cannot come near me.

Living close to the One, even the shadow of death loses its power to frighten.
The deeper layer

The literal line names jam — the messenger of death — as unable to approach one who lives in service of the divine. In the wellbeing lens we keep the comfort and set down the terror: this is not a threat but a reassurance. Living rooted in the One, the mind is no longer haunted by the dread that darkens so many lives. Dukh rog ghanayray — "many pains and diseases" — points not only to the body but to the many afflictions of a restless, forgetting mind.

A Question to Sit With

What is a fear that shrinks when you remember you are part of something much larger than yourself?
